National Electrical Safety Month 2025: Lithium-Ion Battery Safety & More

May is National Electrical Safety Month, a time to raise awareness about safe electrical practices. At Cajun Electric, we’re proud to help keep our Baton Rouge community informed and protected. This year’s campaign, led by the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI), emphasizes the importance of lithium-ion battery safety, e-mobility and disaster preparedness.

Power Up Safely: Tips for a Hazard-Free Home

Lithium-ion batteries power everyday devices like smartphones, laptops, tablets and even toothbrushes. Basically, any rechargeable device that has “Li” or “Lithium” printed on it uses Lithium-ion batteries.

As our daily routines become increasingly dependent on rechargeable devices, it’s crucial that we handle them responsibly. Here are some electrical safety tips to help you power up safely:

  • Use Certified Equipment: Always purchase lithium-ion batteries and chargers that are certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory.
  • Proper Charging Practices: Avoid overcharging devices and never charge them under pillows, on beds or on couches.
  • Safe Storage: Store batteries at room temperature and away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
  • Disposal: Recycle batteries properly – never dispose of them in regular trash bins.

Disaster Preparedness: Electrical Safety During Storms

In Louisiana, severe and sometimes sudden storms are nothing new. The key to safely weathering the storms? Preparedness. Check out these tips to keep you and your loved ones safe:

  • Install GFCIs: Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters can prevent shocks in areas prone to moisture, like kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Backup Power: Consider installing a whole-home generator to maintain power during outages.
  • Surge Protection: Use surge protectors to safeguard appliances from voltage spikes.
  • Professional Inspections: Have a licensed electrician inspect your home’s wiring and electrical systems regularly.
